It's no secret...

exercise is essential for physical and mental wellbeing, but getting outdoors and exercising in nature has also been shown to be helpful and beneficial to mental wellbeing, even more so than exercising in other settings. (Frhaüf, Niedermeier, Elliott, Ledochowski, Marksteiner, & Kopp, 2016)

Not only does exercising outdoors aid in mental health, but it also produces a lower risk for certain diseases, increases quality of life, and boosts life expectancy (Eigenschenk, Thomann, McClure, Davies, Gregory, Detweiler, & Inglés, 2019)

- the restorative effects felt by simply being in nature (Mitchell, 2013)

- the setting you're in is likely to distract you from the exercise you're performing 

- how long the physical activity lasts, how often it happens, and how entertaining or challenging it is (Thomsen et al., 2018)

- the opportunity to socialize and build positive relationships (Thomsen et al., 2018)

- a greater intent to continue outdoor activity versus indoor (Thompson, Coon, et al., 2011)

 the most effective way to enjoy the benefits of outdoor exercise is to:

- be in the woods, forest, or parks (Mitchell, 2013) 

- be near water (Barton & Pretty, 2010)

- be actively moving to get as much of that sweet, pure oxygen inside of your lungs as you can (Berman et al., 2012)
